Dialogues #80

Anyone who is going to get in the music business, songwriters in particular: don't do it because you think you're going to make a lot of money. Just love it. Even if I didn't get paid to do this, I would still do it. I love it so much. One of my wife's mentors said, 'Music and business were never meant to go together. We just have to do the best we can'.

- Grammy winner Luke Laird

Talking to Luke Laird feels like talking to a friend I’ve known for years. We both have a deep love of music and theology. We’re about the same age, and we grew up on opposite sides of Pennsylvania through our teenage years, listening to the same bands and artists. We both have a master's in theology from the same school.

But Luke went on to be one of the most successful songwriters of all time.

He’s a Grammy winner, and has written a truly mind-blowing amount of chart-topping songs: 25 #1 hits and counting. He has also worked with some of the most well-known, successful artists in country music and other genres.

Oh, and he earned his master’s in the middle of writing some of those monster hits.

I’m grateful to Luke for taking time to talk about the huge changes in the music industry over the past years, his love of music across genres, winning a Grammy, and why he chose to pursue a master’s in the middle of all that.

Check out the episode above, give it a like, and tell me what you think.

Until next time.

Dialogues #82 Read in browser↗️ Beauty is so important in our lives. More important than many other topics in philosophy. - Brad Skow I mentioned a few newsletters ago that I have recently become more fascinated by questions related to aesthetics: What exactly makes something--a painting, a piece of music, a film, a sunset--beautiful? Part of the reason for my interest, which goes back to college when I took a course on the topic from one of my favorite teachers, is because I'm a metaphysics...

Dialogues #81 Read in browser↗️ As George Boolos once remarked, much of our ordinary discourse seems to involve reference to abstract objects. It’s not just numbers and sets, though we do talk about them. We talk also of sentences: How many and what words they contain; how those words are spelled and pronounced; whether they were uttered on certain occasions. We talk of books...we read them; talk about what sentences they contain; and argue about what is and is not said in them. One might...

But first… Mark McNeilly is Professor of the Practice of Marketing at UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School, the co-chair...
