The Best Introduction to Philosophy EVER

"Wonder is where philosophy begins."
- Alex Byrne

When someone starts connecting with philosophical ideas, you can bet one of their first questions is,

What's the best book for someone who wants to get started learning philosophy?

Before recently, I usually had some answer to this question that involved explaining how enormous philosophy is as a field, and a few suggestions that included a hodgepodge of books, depending on the person's interests.

But these days, I am happy to recommend a single book for most people who want to start getting into the basics of philosophy:

I discovered the book after being pretty dissatisfied with the textbook I inherited for my intro classes. I looked at a good amount of intro textbooks, somehow stumbled on this one, and now I teach from it every semester.

As I say in the video, part of what caught my attention was the name recognition of the editors. I had read a few pieces from Gideon Rosen when I started getting into the topic of abstract objects, for example. And when I saw how comprehensive the book is, at well over 1,000 pages, and how well it was organized, I was sold.

If you do decide to check out the book, I'd love to know what you think, and what you use it for.

Until next time.

Dialogues #66 Read in browser↗️ Resilience is insanely important. I generally believe that most people who fail at things, and this can be anything, anything in life, from a diet to a relationship to a project to a career, I think most failure is actually just giving up too early. Dialogues #65 Read in browser↗️ Public discourse is ailing. Instead of yielding mutual understanding and respect, our debates are often infected with suspicions, accusations, belief polarization, and ideological entrenchment. One malady is what Richard Lipsky calls the athleticization of politics, “the transposition of sports values into political discourse”. - Robert Garcia and Nate King I had just finished teaching on consequentialism in my ethics class.
