"Contemporary philosophy as we practice it, the very analytical [philosophy]...we haven't done a very good job of finding things that resonate with people, even though there are so many things that we do that really should resonate with people."
If you subscribe to this newsletter, you know I've been thinking about the idea of transformative experience for a while. (Here's a previous post about that topic.)
So I decided to invite her on my podcast. To my surprise, she agreed.
β
Not only did she agree, the episode opens with a nice compliment about Selling Plato. Here's why:
While she is the Millstone Family Professor of Philosophy and Professor of Cognitive Science at Yale University, she cares deeply about philosophy being useful and practical.
Since her book Transformative Experience came out nine years ago, she has been covered by The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Guardian, NPR, and the BBC, among others. She has talked about her work with Sam Harris, Sean Carroll, and Dr. Drew, to name a few. The main ideas behind her book have clearly struck a chord beyond just the philosophy profession.
So she gets what I'm trying to do here, and I'll think you'll see that in the episode. I hope you enjoy it.
We talk about why existentialism is so popular and the appeal of Continental philosophy, what she learned from studying under David Lewis at Princeton (one of the most well-known and influential philosophers of the 20th century), why asking practical philosophical questions is important for the discipline, and more.
This is the first of many episodes coming up this season that I'm excited to share. Other episodes feature working philosophers as well, but you'll also see a few surprises.

Dialogues #68 Read in browserβοΈ I sometimes worry that the very things that make me love teaching will lead me to quit teaching. At its best, there's nothing like it. Even so, there are so many factors working against a successful classroom right now. It is difficult not to get discouraged. β Dolores G. Morris I love teaching, but Iβm now convinced that the formal education system has reached full crisis mode on any metric. I recently saw a post from a philosophy professor that expressed her...
Dialogues #67 Read in browserβοΈ For the first time in history, women hold substantial cultural and institutional power. Men and women differ, on average, in their values: women are more harm-averse, equity-oriented, and prone to resolving conflict through social exclusion. As a result, shifting sex compositions can bring palpable cultural change. The transition has been particularly dramatic in academia, where women were once almost entirely excluded and now constitute majorities. - Dr. Cory...
Dialogues #66 Read in browserβοΈ Resilience is insanely important. I generally believe that most people who fail at things, and this can be anything, anything in life, from a diet to a relationship to a project to a career, I think most failure is actually just giving up too early. I think that's the most common cause of failure. - Zuby, on the latest Selling Plato podcast episode π¨ Episode 19 of the podcast with Zuby is OUT! π¨ Meet Zuby.
