How This Black Hawk Helicopter Pilot Taught Philosophy at West Point

Studying philosophy can have an addictive quality to it. When you walk out of a three hour seminar in grad school, critically examining a particular subject, you feel spent, your brain is mush. And I love that. Because even if I was walking out with more questions than I had answers, I knew that I was sharpening myself, sharpening my mind. And that's so important as a military officer. We get paid to lead units in very ambiguous situations that you have to navigate.

- Major Jon Thompson, MA in Philosophy, Texas A&M

I remember sitting in a graduate philosophy seminar at Texas A&M, and Jon casually mentioned that before entering the philosophy program, he flew Blackhawk helicopters as an Army Aviator. Everyone in the seminar just stopped and stared.

Why would a Blackhawk helicopter pilot with years of military experience drop everything and do a master's in philosophy?

Here's his story:

On a personal note, this episode is one of my favorites, for a couple reasons. I hadn't connected with Jon since he graduated with his master's and went on to teach philosophy at The United States Military Academy (aka West Point). He's just a really good guy whose personality does not betray the greatness of his academic or military achievements.

But I didn't expect this episode to be so meaningful to many of Jon's family and friends, including his military buddies. When he shared the episode on Facebook, I saw some nice comments from people he had flown with, from others who had been to Afghanistan with him, from a former professor of ours, and from many who simply enjoyed hearing their friend tell his story. For me, that makes the episode a win.

In the next couple weeks, I'll have a Christmas present for you. Stay tuned. Now that the semester has just about closed out, I'll be thinking about how to tell you what's coming up in 2026. I'm pumped for what's already in the works.

Until next time.

Jared

And in the interconnectedness of our economy... there are so few merely routine, mundane functions. It can seem that way to people if they don't think through it. But when you think through it, you realize that you're playing a role in a process that is actually quite meaningful." - David Bahnsen David Bahnsen founded The Bahnsen Group and oversees the management of over $9 billion in...

Dialogues #75 Read in browser↗️ When you talk about philosophy, a lot of people's eyes glaze over because they had certain experiences with philosophy. - Gary Gulman I had no idea Gary Gulman cared so much about philosophy. But it shouldn’t have surprised me. I’ve been a fan of standup comedy for as long as I can remember. My earliest impression probably came from watching Ed McMahon introduce comedians on Star Search. I have this foggy memory as a kid that I couldn’t believe standup comedy...

Dialogues #74 Read in browser↗️ "A business that makes nothing but money is a poor business." - Henry Ford I can't wait for you to hear the next podcast episode. A well-known comedian I've followed for over 20 years has been thinking a lot about philosophy lately. It should be out next week. But first: I’ve been thinking recently about business ethics. In a Harvard Business Review study, employees reported that the most important factor for their job was not a promotion, not better working...
